InCellution

Interstitial NanoSystems has developed a proprietary molecular evolution technology, InCellution, for the improvement of therapeutic and diagnostic protein drugs.  InCellution harnesses the natural evolution and improvement process in human Ramos cells to create improved biologicals, including antibodies used to diagnose and treat disease more effectively.

The key steps in the technology involve the insertion of the DNA of the protein drug of interest at a known location in the mammalian cell by a carrier molecule. The carrier molecule has been designed and constructed to specifically insert the drug DNA where the cells’ mechanisms naturally create variantmolecules.  The cell naturally places the variant molecule drug on the surface of the cell. This process is easily applied to as many as one million cells even on a small scale. The cells with the improved drugs are easily separated from each other by common, commercially available cell sorting devices. The cell with the most improved drug is then replicated to make large amounts of the improved protein.

Competitive Advantage

InCellution has the following advantages over competing molecular evolution technologies:

  • InCellution matures targets which:
    • Are not easily evolved in other systems;·         
    • Yields functional molecules including but not restricted to humans;·         
    • Are applicable to a wide range of molecules such as antibodies, antibody like molecules, enzymes,   receptors, hormones, transcription factors, DNA and RNAzymes.·         
  • InCellution is less expensive than animal based systems;·         
  • The mutation, display and selection components of the system are integrated  i.e., occur in the same cell;·         
  • InCellution utilizes the natural system in human B lymphocytes and therefore yields functional molecules relevant for human applications i.e., post production modification is unnecessary;·         
  • The proprietary technology is difficult to reverse engineer or copy. 

Market Value

Many biological products on the market today achieve their success through high specificity and targeted functions. These two key aspects ensure increased efficiency and minimize harmful or undesirable affects. Despite whether the product has been developed using rational design or a randomized approach, the end product usually has an affinity for its target that requires improvement to increase its value. Evolution technologies that modify the product to one with superior functional properties are currently in demand. Interstitial NanoSystems aims to commercialize InCellution to service the billion dollar industry of therapeutic and diagnostic protein reagents. Based on the revenues received by ‘analogous’ companies, we anticipate that a successful exploitation of the technology could earn upward of US$5 million per annum.
