Laboratory Launch for Pulmonary Inhaler Development Work
2 July 2008
The Micro/Nano Physics Research Laboratory at Monash University was officially opened last night by Innovation Minister Hon Gavin Jennings. The MNRL is a state-of-the-art facility within the Monash University Biological Engineering Department.
The research activities of the facility, led by Associate Professor James Friend, revolve around fundamental and applied micro- and nano-physics with emphasis on biomedical engineering applications. The facility contributes to the development of a new generation of delivery devices able to be used for a variety of products including drugs, vaccines, and hormones, for wh ich a finely-controlled spray of nanoparticle medicines provides the most efficient delivery mechanism.
The MNRL is working with Interstitial NanoSystems to develop a unique and innovative pulmonary inhaler for the delivery of pharmaceuticals in a liquid aerosol form. The inhaler technology results in less irritation to the lungs than powdered forms of many pharmaceuticals.
Associate Professor James Friend was also recently recognised through the highly prestigious 2008 Future Summit Leadership Awards. The Future Summit Leadership Awards recognise a new generation of outstanding leaders for their achievements and to contribute to Australia’s future through participation in the Summit.
