Frontiers of Drug Delivery

Interstitial NS has a range of delivery platforms and products for therapeutic healthcare applications utilising nanotechnology under development. Nanotechnology is forecast to have a significant impact on the healthcare industry over the coming years. Nanotechnology encompasses technologies at the nanoscale, 1-100nm, that exhibit novel or advantageous properties as a result of their small size.

Size matters

Research has indicated the enhanced efficacy of nano-formulations of selected pharmaceuticals in the body [1][2]. Nano-structured pharmaceuticals are more soluble and available for uptake when compared with encapsulated or larger particles, and can provide higher local concentrations when administered through existing or novel delivery methods. Hence, nano-formulations of pharmaceuticals have the potential to greatly improve efficacy of treatments and lower healthcare costs.

Nanotech creates value

Nano-enabled drug delivery also makes it possible for drugs to permeate through cell walls and across the blood-brain barrier, which is of critical importance to the expected growth of genetic medicine. New nanotech-enabled drugs are beginning to fill the drug research and development pipeline. Nano versions of existing pharmaceuticals combined with innovative delivery systems will extend their useful life. Importantly, nano-formulations of some drugs can be patented, which may allow pharma companies to “evergreen” proprietary drugs or create protected positions in what was previously a generic market.

Interstitial NS will develop new pharmaceutical products by combining the benefits of nanotechnology with innovative delivery technologies [3].
